17 Sneaky Ways To Increase Your Blog Traffic

Skyrocket your blog traffic

WARNING: this article is not for the faint-hearted. You might discover tips here that are somewhat controversial. The purpose, however, is not to be troublesome. Instead, understand that I’m here to give you clever ways so you can skyrocket your blog traffic immediately. Enjoy!

1. Write provocative blog articles

There is one sure way to failure: try to please everyone all the time. I remember an interview with Tim Ferriss where he said something similar to this:

“To write a best-selling book, you can’t be afraid to step on people’s toes. Instead, take a stand and polarize the discussion.”

And sure, the 4 hour work week did annoy some people. But, no one should be able to say that it wasn’t a gutsy title that attracted attention.

How can you be bold in your writing? What can you do to take a stand in your niche?

If you want more evidence that provocative content can generate massive traffic – I recommend that you read the news. Which one of these headlines do you think sells best?

1. Donald Trump is very grateful for his employees

or,

2. Donald Trump’s Obnoxious Comment Makes His Employees Furious

For alternative number 1, people might say “oh how nice” and then keep on walking. But for number 2, most will want to know more about the comment and what the employees did.

So, which one of these types headlines are being used more often in the news? I did a quick Google search on “news, ” and this was the first result for New York Times:

Trump Picks Twitter Fight With Union Local Chief in Indiana

Provocative articles sell newspapers, as well as increases clicks. Try this sneaky strategy and see if it will boost your traffic.

2. Impress other people’s followers

To be able to touch other people’s followers, you need to know one thing first – what does the influencer want from a guest blogger?

Here is the generic answer to that question: articles that can give excellent value to their readers.

You have your sneaky goal, which is to steal readers from that blog. But regardless of your intention, it’s still a win-win-win situation if you can provide an exceptional guest post to another blog.

Here is what I believe can happen to your traffic once you start guest blogging:

As you can see on the image, even if the traffic decreases after the spike – the gap is still higher after the guest posts.

3. Funnel traffic from the largest paid search engine in the world

What if I told you that there was a search engine that was more valuable that Google, would you believe me?

Let’s face it; not all readers are created equal. Some followers will despise your attempts at trying to monetize your blog while others won’t mind. You want as many people from the second category as possible if you want to make blogging a full-time thing.

What I’m about to tell you now, is going to be precious if you want to monetize your blog. If you feel that this is going a little bit over your head, don’t worry. You can read this article on How to Make Money From Blogging to get yourself up to speed with what I’m talking about.

You might be aware of the fact that it’s harder to acquire a new customer now than it was 20 years ago. But it’s actually easier now to get a client to buy from you again and again.

Therefore, it’s common that bloggers use an entry product that has a low price to get people comfortable with buying from them. The pyramid below explains more about a very common online business model.

Blog traffic

They start at the bottom, and then you slowly guide your customer to pay more and more for other products that you have.

Okay, so what is the name of this paid search engine that can help you get high-quality traffic?

Amazon.com.

People are on Amazon.com to buy things, sometimes with one-click. That’s especially true for Kindle books. Let me ask you a question:

What’s stopping you from publishing a Kindle book and becoming an authority in your niche? Nothing that I can think of. For example, it does not matter where you live.

You can easily place a link to a free bonus in your Kindle book to capture the customer’s email address. If you want more information about setting up an email list and creating a free gift, check out our guide on how to create an email list.

Here is an example of how we capture email addresses from our latest Kindle book:

4. Jump on trending topics

There’s a lot of traffic to be gained from a trending topic. For example, think of the Gangnam style videos.

There was a reason why a lot of companies started creating their own version of Gangnam style. It was a trending topic that a lot of people liked to watch and share at the time.

Now, it’s important that you act fast when these things happen. Trending topics can quickly become saturated and even boring for the masses.

Therefore, my recommendation is that you always keep a look out for these types of events. They can dramatically boost your traffic, and they occur more often than you might think.

Another example is Pokémon Go. A lot of people got a first mover advantage when they started talking about Pokémon Go early on. Now that market is pretty saturated and I wouldn’t call it a trending topic.

Since I like practicality, I will give you a tool so you can easily find trending topics. The tool is called Google Trends and it’s completely free to use.

5. Ego-bait influencers in your niche

Most people like to get praised for their accomplishments. Influencers in your niche are no exception to this fact. Now, how can you use this to your advantage?

Well, have you heard of the law of reciprocity? That law states that when someone gives something to someone else – the receiver will feel obligated to give back in some way.

Okay, so with that knowledge, let me ask you this:

What do you want from the influencer if your goal is to increase the number of visitors that your blog gets?

How about a shout out on a social media channel? A retweet or like from an influencer can have more of an impact on the traffic than you think.

Therefore, your goal should be to get a response from the person that you’re targeting. (I know that the word targeting can have a “Machiavellian” connotation to it. But in my defense; you’re reading an article called “Sneaky Ways” not “Friendly Ways.”)

So in conclusion, you’ll want to ego-bait an influencer in your niche in the hope of getting a shout out.

Here are two ways that you can appeal to a person’s ego indirectly:

  • Create an article called Top 10 Most Influential People in (your niche).
  • Give attention to a project that is relevant to the influencer by writing a blog post about it.

Now, it’s important that you link to their blog or another place where they can be followed. Becuase they might be able to see referral traffic from your site when they check Google Analytics.

You can also reach out to the blogger and “ask” if it’s okay that you’ve added them to your list. Or, just send them a good old tweet and hope for a retweet.

6. Use infographics to create brand awareness

People are passionate about infographics that are useful and fun. And when people love something, they tend to share it.

Start thinking of ways that you add value to an image while simultaneously creating brand awareness. Here is an example of a simple infographic that was created via canva:

Hopefully, that infographic gave you some inspiration for images that you can create.

7. Learn the little-known secrets to creating irresistible headlines

The headline is one of the most important pieces of your content. Without a captivating one, who will click through and read your article?

Now, there are many different ways to create a compelling headline. You can read more about those in our post How to Write Awesome Headlines.

Let’s go over two sneaky headlines, so you can get an idea of how you can use this strategy to boost your traffic.

  • 10 Grammatical Mistakes That Makes You Look Dumb
  • Are Your Eating Habits Turning You Into Nasty Person?

Your goal with a sneaky headline is to ignite curiosity. You can do this by an incomplete question or thought.

8. Distinguish yourself by excluding people

A lot of bloggers want to include as many readers as possible. They try to create content about several different topics to please everyone.

And while the including strategy does work for some people – I think that it is far more efficient to use the excluding strategy. Now, I agree that excluding people in order to get more traffic can seem paradoxical at first.

But consider the fact that a lot of successful marketers say that the money is in the niches. In this case, I think a lot of traffic can be found when you go very specific in your targeting.

The reason for this is because your customer avatar will respond better to your articles. “Hey, he’s talking to me, how can he know all my problems?”

How can you exclude people in your blogging? Well, if you have a blog about weddings, for example, you can write a paragraph on your about page that says:

This blog is not for:

  • Single people
  • People that are looking for relationship advice
  • Couples that wants to get a divorce

I hope you see the point that I’m trying to make. If you found this part interesting – I recommend that you read the article A Secret Marketing Strategy That THEY Don’t Want You To Know About.

9. Tell a heartwarming story

People love an inspiring story. Especially one that resonates with the emotions that they themselves have experienced. That’s important to note – THE EMOTIONS – not necessarily the actual story.

So, for example, let’s take the story of Oprah Winfrey. Not everyone can relate to being molested by a cousin and uncle when one is 9 years old. But the FEELING of being taken advantage of is something that a lot of people can resonate with.

Therefore, think of your own journey. Perhaps you were overweight, and now you’re not. Or, you were struggling financially, and now you’re abundant. Or, you were unwillingly single and now you’re happily married. Whatever your story is, what emotions can you spark when you tell it?

The more people that will resonate with your story, the more people will share. And the more people that share – the more traffic you get. So, to put this strategy into sneaky words: play to people’s emotions and fantasies.

10. Be an exceptional detective

This article is all about being as clever as a detective. It’s not about saving the world or doing something grandiose. It’s simply here to give you ideas so you can increase your blog traffic.

If you make more money as a result of it, great! Then perhaps you can use that for philanthropical activities. But for now, let’s dive into the power of keywords, and why you NEED to take advantage of them.

Think about it; there are certain words and phrases that people use when they go to any search engine. Be it;

  • Google
  • Pinterest
  • Amazon
  • Yahoo
  • Youtube
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Etc.

Therefore, wouldn’t it make sense to find out what those specific words and phrases are? If you do not, you might potentially miss out on thousands upon thousands of visitors.

Now, if you want to be really sneaky, you can try Long Tail Pro that we use to find out the search volume as well as the competition for a “long-tail keyword.” If you want a free tool, just use Google Keyword Planner Tool.

11. Follow to get followed

As the saying goes, great followers will become great leaders. I have no doubt in my mind that you will too if you try this sneaky strategy.

Now, let’s talk about your objective. You want more traffic, right? One way to increase traffic is to get more shares on social media.

Getting shares on social media will do two things for your blog. Obviously, it will immediately attract more people to your website. But it will also give you a more indirect and long-term benefit; increased authority in the eyes of the search engines like Google.

Perhaps you’ve heard about backlinks? Now, according to Google, you should not focus on link building. But let me just introduce you to the fact that not all backlinks are created equal.

There’s a thing called orphan pages. An orphan page can be a social media profile that has zero followers or activity. A link from such a profile is not very useful for search engine optimization.

So, you’ll want to get the opposite if you want powerful links to your blog so you can rank in Google. One way to accomplish this is to increase the number of followers that you have on your social media profile.

How do you do that? Well, most people will say that you should produce excellent content that people will want to share. I agree, there’s just one problem – you don’t have anyone to share it to in the beginning.

Therefore, use the “follow for follow” method to get a basic foundation of followers. This is another strategy that takes advantage of the law of reciprocity. It revolves around showing courtesy by following the new follower. To give you a hint, you’ll want to be the new follower that people will want to follow back.

It’s important to follow people that are interested in your niche so you can get shares. One way to find niche related followers is by searching for a particular keyword.

For example, you could aim to get 500 followers on Pinterest. Just find a board that is related to your niche and begin following the people that are following that board. After you have followed 1500-2000 people, you should have gotten 500 niche related individuals that are following you back.

For Twitter and Instagram, you can use tools like Crowdfireapp to make this process even easier.

12. Leverage other people’s knowledge and experience

You don’t always have to be the creator of content. By interviewing people, you can take advantage of other people’s experience while still providing high-quality content to your readers.

Another benefit of interviewing is the fact that the individual being questioned might want to share your article on social media.

People love to read the stories of the successful people. So try to add questions like:

Can you tell us a little bit about your background?

What inspired you to start your business?

What do you think is the most important skill to have to be successful?

Now, the more value that you can add to the person that you’re interviewing – the better. It’s important to note, however, that you don’t necessarily need a massive amount of visitors to pull off an interview.

Successful people love to tell their story and share their wisdom with the world. By asking for an interview, you also stroke their ego. So, never shy away from asking, you never know what response you’ll get before you ask.

You can either interview people via email or Skype.

13. Recreate content that is proven to be shared

Reinventing the wheel is tough. And as the saying goes, pioneers often die with arrows in their backs.

Why not choose an easier path for yourself? You can easily find ideas that are proven to work by looking at your own content as well as others.

First, log into Google Analytics and find your most popular post. Also, check the number of shares to see which one got the most. Try to repurpose that article and add a new twist to it.

The second step is to search for inspiration elsewhere. You can go to Google News and type in the keyword for your niche. Click through on the different articles and see which one that people resonate with the most by looking at the number of shares.

After that, create your own version of the content within the viral article. When you’re done, send it out to your followers and hopefully it will spread like wildfire.

14. Become a reliable resource by creating a Facebook group around your niche

Why don’t you start your own Facebook group? If you’re blogging a lot about frugal living, you can create a Facebook group about saving tips or budgeting.

You may need to promote the group at first, but once you got your basic foundation of members, you can expect to get natural growth.

Now, when you own a Facebook group with thousands of members, you own an asset. For example, you can drive traffic to your blog by pinning an important post to the top of the timeline.

People will also see you as an authority since you’re the leader of the group.

15. Sneak in thoughtful links in appropriate places

When I say sneak in links, I’m not talking about spamming. You should never have to do that to get traffic. What I am proposing, however, is that you put links in places where it adds value to the discussion.

For example, make it a habit of posting your new articles on subreddits.

If you’re active on a forum, you might be allowed to have a link on your profile or under your posts. That’s a good way of being discreet while still promoting your content. If people are interested in what you have to say, they’ll click through.

16. Guilt people into sharing

Have you read the book The Thank you Economy by Gary Vaynerchuck? If so, you might have heard about the concept of “guilting people into buying.”

Well, as a blogger that wants to increase traffic, you’ll want to first and foremost guilt people into sharing so you can reach more people.

The best way to guilt someone is not to tell them how much you’ve done for them. No no, instead just give, give, give (jab, jab, jab) and occasionally ask for a share (right hook).

Some people have share buttons that say “sharing is caring.” I think those buttons are an excellent way to ask people indirectly.

So in conclusion, create high-quality articles that helps your readers so much so that they feel guilted to help you back by sharing.

17. Make good use of the opportunities offered by group boards on Pinterest

My final tip for you is to join group boards on Pinterest. You can gain a lot of free traffic by being a devoted contributor to a board related to your niche.

If your articles are epic, you can expect them to be repinned again and again. The great thing about Pinterest is that it’s a search engine. This means that you might have content that will be “discovered” months after it has been published.

So please, take advantage of the opportunity that Pinterest provides to bloggers. And no, you don’t need to blog about recipes to have success on Pinterest.

So there you have it; 17 sneaky ways to increase your traffic. Now it’s time for you to go out and apply some of these ideas. Good luck my friend, until next time.
