How Long Does It Take To Write A Book?

In this blog post, I’ll answer the question: How long does it take to write a book.  We got this question on our Youtube Channel so I thought I might answer it with a blog post so more people can benefit from it. The real answer to this question is that it “depends”. Always the funniest answer to hear, right? No, but I will explain more so you can respond to this question yourself.

What Is It That You’re Going To Write About?

If you’re writing a book about a topic that you’re somewhat interested, then the answer to how long does it take to write a book will be: not long. The opposite is true if you’re writing a book on a topic that you’re not interested in or know something about. We’ve written some of our books, but it has always been on topics that are interesting to us. So, this is the first question that will help you to figure out how long it might take you.

How Long Does It Take To Write A Book And How Long Does It Have To Be To Provide The Value That The Reader Want?

A lot of people have this the wrong way. They mistakenly think that the longer the book, the more value it holds. This statement couldn’t be further from the truth. During 2015 I finished 54 books and read a lot more books that I didn’t finish. Now, the reason why I didn’t finish some books were because they were boring.  If it were true that the longer the book is, the better it is, then everybody would be reading textbooks on their free time. There’s a reason why most people that finish university never read one more book in their lifetime. They are afraid that it’s going to be like the books they read in school.

So your focus should be: how can I provide as much value as possible without adding a bunch of fluff to the book? People have a shorter attention span than ever before, and therefore they don’t want anyone wasting their time, much less, a book that they can just walk away from. In the beginning, we published a book that got a review that said something along the lines of “Some excellent points but when I put this book down I couldn’t pick it up.” He gave the book a two star.

When Do You Write and For How Long Do You Write?

Now, if you watched the video on Youtube, you know that we write 1 hour per day when we write a book ourselves. We also write in the morning. Now, this might be different for you, but you want to write when your energy and creativity will be at its highest. My mental focus is always the best before lunch. For some reason strange reason it’s also pretty good late at night. So find your “special moments” to write.

Use a Timer

Using a timer will force you to finish the job. Set a timer for 60 minutes and put a goal to write at least 1000 words. Never edit during this time. You want to write as much as you can and as fast as you can. Writing without editing will allow you to get into a flow. After a while, words will come to you out of nowhere. If you focus on your grammar, spelling, and text structure, you’ll blow it. So how long does it take to write a book? Well, if you use a timer, it can be done within 24 hours.

What We Tell Our Writers

As we’ve stated before, we hire writers to write most of our books. We found that this is an excellent way to leverage our time, and the truth is that we don’t enjoy writing about all the topics that we publish books on. Now, we tell our writers a few things to get as much of a quality book as possible:

  1. Use You and Me. We tell the writers to write as if they were talking to one person. Guess what; there’s most likely only one person reading the book at the same time. If it’s not, they’re still likely to want to be addressed as you instead of “you guys” or something like that.
  2. Always make sure that the content is giving what the title is promising. In the beginning, we hired one writer that was supposed to write a “How to” book. This writer only wrote benefits of the subject. Guess what; the readers don’t want to read an empty sales letter. If they’re reading a non-fiction book, they most likely want to learn something practical. If they’ve bought the book, it means that they are already sold on the topic.
  3. Use examples. Using references that the reader can relate to is the best ways to teach them, in my opinion. That’s why it can be hard to learn subjects like physics, math and so on. We’re not being taught it in a way so we can make connections. If you’ve ever missed a math class before, you know what I mean. You come back the next lesson, and it feels like the teacher is speaking another language. You need the information from the previous lesson to connect the dots. So we always like to tell our writers to give examples that the reader can relate to.

Did that Help?

Okay, so I hope that this helped you to answer the question: How long does it take to write a book. We write a book in 1-2 weeks, but I know that some people can write a book within 24 hours. We could probably do that as well, but we just like to write one hour everyday instead. The main point to take from this blog post is that you should edit and proofread after you’ve written a text. Never do it while you’re writing. We have hired an editor in our publishing business but for these blog posts, I use Grammarly. I love Grammarly because it allows me to correct any mistakes that I might have done. Thank you very much for reading! If you have any questions, just leave them in the comments below. You can subscribe to this blog somewhere on this page if you want to be updated when we release new content. Have a great day!
